Kenya’s Under 23 team, known as the Emerging Stars, made a powerful statement in their opening match of the COSAFA Cup by defeating defending champions Zambia 2-0 on Thursday at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in South Africa.
The Emerging Stars set a high tempo right from the kickoff, putting Zambia on the back foot. Their early aggression paid off in the 8th minute when Patrick Otieno was fouled in the box, earning Kenya a penalty. Austine Odhiambo stepped up with confidence and slotted the ball home, giving Kenya an early 1-0 lead.
Kenya’s dominance continued as they doubled their advantage shortly thereafter. Patrick Otieno, who was instrumental in earning the penalty, found the back of the net himself. Benson Omalla provided a precise assist, allowing Otieno to calmly finish and make it 2-0.
