COSAFA Cup 2024: Kenya stun defending champions Zambia

Date:

Kenya’s Under 23 team, known as the Emerging Stars, made a powerful statement in their opening match of the COSAFA Cup by defeating defending champions Zambia 2-0 on Thursday at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in South Africa.

The Emerging Stars set a high tempo right from the kickoff, putting Zambia on the back foot. Their early aggression paid off in the 8th minute when Patrick Otieno was fouled in the box, earning Kenya a penalty. Austine Odhiambo stepped up with confidence and slotted the ball home, giving Kenya an early 1-0 lead.

Kenya’s dominance continued as they doubled their advantage shortly thereafter. Patrick Otieno, who was instrumental in earning the penalty, found the back of the net himself. Benson Omalla provided a precise assist, allowing Otieno to calmly finish and make it 2-0.

In the other Group B match, Zimbabwe secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Comoros. This result places Kenya at the top of Group B with 3 points, followed closely by Zimbabwe.

The Emerging Stars’ impressive performance against Zambia sets a strong foundation for their COSAFA Cup campaign. Head coach Stanley Okumbi praised the team’s discipline and execution, highlighting the importance of maintaining their momentum in the upcoming matches.

Next up for Kenya is a clash against Comoros on Sunday at Wolfson Stadium, scheduled for 1 pm EAT. With confidence riding high and a clear objective in sight, the Emerging Stars are eager to build on their opening victory and solidify their position at the top of Group B.

As the COSAFA Cup progresses, all eyes will be on Kenya’s young talents, who have shown they have the skill and determination to compete against the best in the region.
