Kenya Sevens squad named for Paris 2024 Olympics

Date:

The Kenya Sevens squad for the highly anticipated 2024 Paris Olympics has been announced, featuring a mix of seasoned veterans and fresh talent.

Co-captains Vincent Onyala and Tony Omondi lead the charge, with Onyala marking his second Olympic appearance.

Vincent Onyala, a standout performer from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, is set to return to the Olympic stage.

Having been picked for the 2020 squad at the age of 24, Onyala’s experience will be invaluable to the team. Alongside him, Herman Humwa, the Kenya Harlequin captain, also makes a return, having represented Kenya in Tokyo.

The rest of the squad comprises players making their Olympic debuts. Co-captain Tony Omondi, John Okoth, Kevin Wekesa, George Ooro, and Samuel Asati will bring fresh energy to the team.

Speedsters Patrick Odongo and Lamec Ambetsa, alongside Brian Tanga, Nigel Amaitsa, and Chrisant Ojwang, round out the main squad. Festus Shiasi and Dennis Abukuse will travel as reserves, ready to step in if needed.

The pools for the 2024 Paris Olympics 7s tournament have been announced, with 12 teams competing for the title in July. Kenya, the African champions, are placed in Pool B alongside second-seeds Argentina, Australia, and Samoa.

The competition is set to be fierce, with New Zealand, the top seeds, in Pool A with Ireland, South Africa, and Japan, and Pool C featuring the reigning champions Fiji, hosts France, the USA, and Uruguay.

The men’s 7s competition will run from July 24-27, with matches starting two days before the official opening ceremony. The preliminary and quarterfinal stages will take place before a break for the opening ceremony on July 26.

The medal-winning teams will be unveiled on July 27. The women’s tournament will follow from July 28-30, culminating in the gold and bronze medal matches.

Kenya’s placement in Pool B means they will face tough competition from Argentina, who had an impressive run in the World 7s Series, as well as strong teams from Australia and Samoa.

The Kenyan squad will need to draw on their mix of experience and new talent to advance through the pool stages.

As the countdown to the Paris Olympics continues, the Kenya Sevens squad is gearing up for a challenging but exciting journey.

With a blend of experience and youthful vigor, they aim to make a significant impact on the global stage.
