Ethiopia has unveiled a formidable team for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, featuring reigning champions and record-holders ready to defend and claim titles on the global stage.
Leading the charge is Selemon Barega, who will defend his 10,000m title. Barega clinched gold in Tokyo ahead of Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo and will be joined in Paris by compatriots Berihu Aregawi and Yomif Kejelcha, the latter also competing in the 5000m.
In the women’s category, Gudaf Tsegay is set to compete in a triple threat across the 1500m, 5000m, and 10,000m events. Tsegay, an Olympic 5000m bronze medallist and world champion in both the 5000m and 10,000m, will have the support of world 1500m silver medallist Diribe Welteji in the 1500m.
Ethiopia’s hopes for the 3000m steeplechase lie with world record-holder Lamecha Girma, who aims for his first global gold after securing silver in Tokyo and at the last three World Championships.
In the marathon, the women’s team is bolstered by world record-holder Tigist Assefa, alongside Amane Beriso and Megertu Alemu. The men’s marathon team features legends such as Kenenisa Bekele, Sisay Lemma, and Deresa Geleta.
