Morocco has stamped its dominance in the Zone 1 Qualifiers for the 2024 FIBA U18 Afro Basket, earning a well-deserved qualification for both the men’s and women’s teams. This achievement follows a series of impressive performances in Monastir, Tunisia, from July 11-14.

Competing against fellow Maghreb nations Algeria and Tunisia, Morocco showcased its basketball prowess and clinched the coveted spots in the upcoming Afro Basket finals slated for August in South Africa.

The competition in Monastir was fierce, with Tunisia hosting the event at Salle Mohamed Mzali. Despite playing on foreign soil, the Moroccan teams demonstrated exceptional skill and determination, particularly in the decisive matches against the hosts.

The women’s final was a nail-biter, filled with suspense and showcasing the fighting spirit of both teams. Morocco had previously lost to Tunisia in the group phase, but they approached the final with renewed vigor.

The game was closely contested, with Morocco taking a narrow lead at the end of the first quarter (9-7) and extending it to 30-22 by halftime.

Tunisia fought back in the second half, narrowing the gap to just four points by the end of the third quarter. With two minutes remaining, the score was tied at 49-49, thanks to a crucial play by Tunisia’s Youmna Zaghouani.

However, it was Morocco’s Eiza Louveton who became the hero, sinking a decisive three-pointer in the final minute, securing a 52-49 victory for her team. This win marked Morocco’s first-ever appearance at the U18 AfroBasket.

In contrast, the men’s final was a more one-sided affair. Led by Omar Karem, who scored an impressive 26 points, Morocco quickly established control of the game. By the end of the first quarter, they had a nine-point lead, which they extended to 50-33 by halftime.

Tunisia attempted to mount a comeback in the third quarter, reducing the deficit to 11 points (61-50). However, Morocco’s relentless offense proved too much to handle.

They dominated the final quarter, scoring 24 points to Tunisia’s eight, and finished the game with a resounding 85-58 victory. This performance underscored Morocco’s strength and readiness for the upcoming AfroBasket finals.
