In an exciting development for rugby fans, the sold-out Castle Lager Rugby Championship Test between the Springboks and the All Blacks in Cape Town on Saturday, 7 September, will feature an exhilarating curtain-raiser.
The Springbok Women will take on the star-studded Barbarians Women, promising a day of top-tier rugby at the DHL Stadium.
The match, a pivotal part of the Springbok Women’s preparation for the upcoming WXV 2 tournament later this month, marks their second encounter with the Barbarians in two years.
Last year, the two teams faced off at Athlone Stadium, with the Barbarians securing a 38-26 victory in a match filled with thrilling moments and spectacular tries.
Lynne Cantwell, SA Rugby’s High-Performance Manager for Women’s Rugby, expressed her enthusiasm about the upcoming game, emphasizing the significance of the ongoing relationship between the Springbok Women and the Barbarians.
“Any match against the Barbarians has a special feel to it, and we are really honored, privileged, and massively thankful for their willingness to travel all the way to South Africa for this,” said Cantwell.
She highlighted the importance of this match as a preparatory step for WXV 2 and the added prestige of playing as a curtain-raiser to one of the most anticipated sporting events of the year. “We have not seen their squad, but we know it will be packed with international experience and class. Their presence will be a massive boost to the exposure of WXV 2 and DHL Stadium,” she added.
Barbarian F.C. President John Spencer echoed this sentiment, expressing delight at the opportunity to return to Cape Town. “It is a privilege to be invited back to Cape Town, playing in the magnificent DHL Stadium against a team who are fast becoming great rivals and friends of the Barbarians,” he said.
Fiona Stockley, Barbarian F.C. and Women’s Team Manager, promised a thrilling contest, with the Barbarians Women bringing their trademark flair, courage, spirit, and passion to the field. She assured fans that the team would feature a stellar cast of players, continuing to build on the strong bonds and competitive matches that have characterized their rivalry with the Springbok Women.
