The 2024-2025 Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League season got underway on Saturday, with the opening day witnessing a cautious start, as three of the four matches ended in draws.
Former champions Tusker FC emerged as the only side to collect maximum points, narrowly defeating Sofapaka 1-0.
In the early kick-off at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, Posta Rangers and Bandari FC battled to a 1-1 draw. Posta Rangers’ Henry Juma etched his name in the record books as he scored the first goal of the new campaign, finding the back of the net in the 27th minute.
Despite holding a 1-0 lead at halftime, Rangers couldn’t secure all three points. Bandari’s Beja Nyamawi came to the rescue, leveling the score to secure a point for the visitors.
At Thika Stadium, Shabana FC seemed poised for an opening day victory after Mathew Tegisi netted in just the third minute, giving them a 1-0 advantage against Bidco United.
However, Bidco responded early in the second half, with Douglas Mokaya scoring the equalizer in the 49th minute to make it 1-1, and both teams shared the spoils.
Meanwhile, KCB and Kariobangi Sharks settled for a goalless draw at the Police Sacco Stadium. Both teams struggled to find the breakthrough, resulting in a stalemate that left fans yearning for more action.
The day’s only outright victory came from Tusker FC, who managed to secure a narrow 1-0 win over Sofapaka at Machakos Stadium. Chrspine Erambo’s 61st-minute strike made the difference, ensuring that the Brewers started their season on a high note.
Tusker’s win places them at the top of the table, taking an early lead in the FKF Premier League standings.
With the opening round of fixtures completed, the early signs indicate a competitive season ahead, as teams jostle for supremacy in the Kenyan top flight.
As the only team to secure a win, Tusker has set the pace, but with many more matches to come, the chase for the title is far from decided. The results highlight the unpredictability of the league, suggesting that fans can expect more thrilling encounters as the season progresses.
