Following a thrilling 31-27 victory over the All Blacks in Johannesburg, the Springboks have shifted their focus to the second Test against New Zealand in Cape Town this weekend.
Young halfbacks Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Grant Williams emphasized the need for consistency and warned against complacency as they aim to avoid falling into the “Ireland trap.”
The Springboks’ recent triumph, their third consecutive win in the Castle Lager Rugby Championship, was marked by a standout performance from Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who contributed 16 points with his reliable kicking.
Williams added to the victory with a decisive try just five minutes before the final whistle, which secured the win for the hosts and extended their lead at the top of the tournament standings. The Springboks now sit comfortably with 14 points, ahead of New Zealand, Argentina, and Australia.
The win not only boosted the team’s confidence but also marked their third straight victory over their historic rivals, the All Blacks.
Despite the intense media scrutiny surrounding their previous record at Emirates Airline Park, both Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Williams acknowledged the importance of building on this momentum ahead of their upcoming matches, including crucial fixtures against Argentina later this month.
“It was special,” said Feinberg-Mngomezulu. “Our preparation during the week was key, with all the players putting the team first and supporting each other. The atmosphere in the stadium was incredible, which helped us push through in such a tough game.”
Williams shared his excitement over the hard-fought victory, especially after the team battled back from a 27-17 deficit. “It was a great feeling to get a win against the All Blacks after last year’s heavy defeat in New Zealand. We placed a big emphasis on sticking together, and it paid off.”
With the Cape Town match on the horizon, both players underscored the importance of maintaining focus and intensity. “We don’t want to repeat what happened against Ireland in July, where we lost the second Test,” said Feinberg-Mngomezulu. “If we can bring the same hunger and determination, it will take us closer to securing the Rugby Championship title.”
Williams echoed this sentiment, stressing that the team remains grounded and committed to their goals. “We’re happy with our progress, but we’re not taking our foot off the gas. Next week’s match will be just as challenging, and we’re ready for it.”
The Springboks have arrived in Cape Town and will resume their on-field preparations on Monday, eager to continue their impressive run in the tournament.
