Standard Chartered Marathon: Heat no obstacle as Ouma wins Kisumu’s 10km road race

Date:

Vincent Ouma delivered an exceptional performance at the Standard Chartered Marathon satellite run in Kisumu, winning the men’s 10-kilometre road race in a fiercely contested event. The race, which concluded at Moi Stadium, saw Ouma outshine his competitors despite the challenging conditions synonymous with Kisumu’s hot sun and heatwave.

Speaking after the victory, Ouma shared his secret to success. “I knew the heat would be tough, but I kept pushing myself. I had trained under similar conditions, and I remained hydrated throughout the race. That’s how I managed to stay ahead.” Ouma also credited his mental strength and determination for helping him cross the finish line first.

Ouma, who has been making strides in his running career, revealed his ambitions for the future. “This win motivates me even more. My goal is to compete in more national and international races, and hopefully, represent Kenya at a higher level. I want to keep improving and make my country proud.”

The marathon was part of the first satellite run of this year’s Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon, which saw over 450 participants flock to the Lakeside City. This is the third consecutive year that Kisumu has hosted the satellite run, bringing a vibrant atmosphere as the city was painted in blue and green.

Neema Gitau, the Standard Chartered Head of Brand and Marketing, emphasized the importance of the satellite runs, noting, “Satellite runs were introduced to bring the StanChartNairobiMarathon experience to runners who are unable to join us in Nairobi.” Gitau highlighted how these runs have become essential in fostering community engagement and promoting sustainability.

She further mentioned the common sustainability goals shared by Kisumu County and the marathon, adding, “Similar to the tree planting greening initiative by Kisumu City, participants at the StanChartNairobiMarathon will each receive a tree seedling to go and plant. We expect over 20,000 trees to be planted as a result of the marathon this year.”

Ouma’s triumph and the collective efforts at the marathon underscored both athletic excellence and the ongoing commitment to sustainability in Kisumu and beyond.
