The Carabao Cup will see quarterfinals played on the midweek of Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 December 2024, headlined by a potential thriller between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

Spurs and United will meet at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday evening, with the North London hosts seeing this tournament as a major chance to end their long trophy drought. Tottenham’s last piece of silverware was the League Cup (this very competition) in the 2007-08 season, and manager Ange Postecoglou is determined to continue his record of always winning a trophy in his second season in charge at a club.
“It is confusing to me that people are making a big deal out of something – surely I am supposed to answer something that is true?” said the Australian. “Like if I don’t win in the second year this year, and I come out next year and say, ‘well I always win in it’… well no, actually it is not true. But I have just said something that is true and it seems like it has upset a lot of people for some reason.”
The quarterfinals open on Wednesday 18 December with Arsenal hosting Crystal Palace for a London derby. Staggered kick-offs on the same evening then bring clashes pitting Newcastle United against Brentford, and Southampton hosting Liverpool.
The Reds have enjoyed a brilliant start to the season under new manager Arne Slot, and will head to St Mary’s confident of advancing into the semifinals.
“The team won this cup last season and I would like to see us have the best chance of keeping it again,” said Slot. “It is a very busy time of the season, with many matches across different competitions, but we will field a strong team, that I can promise you.”
The Carabao Cup also represents a major opportunity for Newcastle, with manager Eddie Howe arguing that their win over Chelsea in the previous round is a major statement of intent.
“Confidence is always a fragile thing, you can do lots of different things, but winning football matches is the only thing that gives footballers confidence, in my opinion,” said the Magpies boss.
He added, “We narrowly missed out against Chelsea last year for a semifinal, that was agonising for us, but fingers crossed we can go a step further this year.”
