Premier League: North London derby and other key battles to expect on DStv

Date:

The North London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur will headline a midweek round of Premier League action played from Tuesday 14 to Thursday January 16, 2025.

Arsenal and Tottenham will clash at the Emirates Stadium on the evening of Wednesday January 15, with Spurs looking to avenge a 1-0 defeat they suffered at the hands of the Gunners back in September 2024.

In fact, Tottenham have failed to win any of their last five matches against their arch rivals, leaving manager Ange Posteocglou hungry for his first victory over the team in red and white.

“I guess every derby is a bit different. You can tell it is fairly intense between the two clubs, geographically situated in the same part of town and trying to defend the same turf. There is always a bit of an edge,” said Postecoglou.

“We know what it means to our supporters and what it means to the club. For us, what’s really important is we have to go out and perform, play our football, play well, because irrespective of the rivalry, they are a top side so you need to do that.”

Another side seeking revenge will be title hopefuls Liverpool, who suffered a surprise loss at home to Nottingham Forest in the first half of the season and will be looking to return the favour when they visit the City Ground on Tuesday night.

“If you lose a home game that’s always a setback and especially if you face a team, we never know, maybe they will go all the way to fight for Champions League places, but normally this team is not ending up in the top 10. If you lose a game against them that’s a big disappointment, although they were organised and structured really well,” said Reds manager Arne Slot.

Other matches to look out for in this midweek include Brentford targeting the scalp of Manchester City; a London derby between West Ham United and Fulham; Chelsea hosting Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge; Wolverhampton Wanderers visiting Newcastle United; and Manchester United welcoming Southampton to Old Trafford on Thursday night.

“You can see we have a good structure, a good style of play, the way that he wants us to work,” said United defender Harry Maguire of their progress under manager Ruben Amorim. “He is tactically very good. He’s proven that he’s a winner.”
