Match background
Manchester United have endured a terrible Premier League campaign and are desperate for a positive result against a big name.
The Red Devils have enough daylight between themselves and the relegation zone not to fear the dreaded drop, but even a lowly to-half finish seems beyond them. As for Arsenal, they are looking to put pressure on Liverpool in the title race and winning at Old Trafford will not be a luxury, but rather a necessity for Mikel Arteta’s charges.
What the teams are saying
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim on his struggles at the helm of the team:
“I have a lot of problems. My job is so hard, but I am here to continue my job to the next week with my beliefs and I will try to win again. It is the hardest competition in the world. I am here to help my players. I understand my situation, my job, I am confident on my work and I just want to win games. The place in the table is my worry, I am not worried about me.”
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on the challenge of playing away to Manchester United:
“Every game has a different context. We know the difficulty and the history when you look at what we’ve done over there [at Old Trafford], so we’re going to have to be at our best to earn the right to win the game.”
Players to watch
Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United
While Manchester United’s season has been a miserable one, midfielder Bruno Fernandes has at least kept up a relatively high standard. The Portuguese, who scored in the last game against Arsenal, will hope to lead the Red Devils to a much-needed home triumph.
Mikel Merino, Arsenal
With Arsenal short on options in attack, midfielder Mikel Merino has on occasion stepped in as a striker and performed relatively well. The 28-year-old Spaniard is excellent in aerial battles and will hope to find the back of the net against Man United on Sunday evening.
Head-to-head
In head-to-head stats, Manchester United and Arsenal have met in 242 matches across all competitions since 1894. The Red Devils have claimed 102 wins compared to 90 for the Gunners, while 50 games have been drawn.
The teams have met twice already this season. Arsenal won 2-0 in a Premier League clash at the Emirates Stadium in December 2024 (with goals from Jurrien Timber and William Saliba), but an
FA Cup clash at the same venue just over a month later ended 1-1 after extra time (with goals from Gabriel Magalhaes and Bruno Fernandes), before United won 5-3 on penalties).
