Kisumu is set to come alive this Saturday as Quinten Mall hosts the highly anticipated Makaveli EAFC Tournament, a gaming event that’s drawing attention far beyond the lakeside city.
Backed by local esports patron Derrick Makaveli, the tournament is not just about bragging rights or prize money—it’s a statement of intent for a growing esports scene in Kisumu.
Under the rallying call “Inua MaYouth na Esports Mashinani,” the event is focused on empowering youth through competitive gaming, with participants coming from as far as Nairobi, Nakuru, Naivasha, the Coast, and Kakamega.
The stakes are high. A Ksh 30,000 prize pool awaits the top players, with Ksh 15,000 earmarked for the champion, Ksh 10,000 for second place, and Ksh 5,000 for third. Players finishing fourth to eighth will receive exclusive branded merchandise.
But for the locals, it’s more than just prizes. It’s about pride. Kisumu’s top gamers — Terminator, Dulo, SeeknDestroy, George, Savage, and Jim — are fired up to defend their turf and ensure the trophy doesn’t leave the county.
Kevin Wambua, the Kisumu Esports representative and lead organiser, says the event is just the beginning. “We’re building something sustainable here,” he noted. “With backing from Mama Selina and Rangers Esports, we’re looking to make Kisumu a real force in the gaming world.”
Makaveli, the tournament’s sponsor, echoed the vision. “There’s so much raw talent here. What we need are platforms like this to nurture it. Esports can create real opportunities, not just in entertainment but in employment too. Kisumu is ready.”
As gamers gear up for the showdown, all eyes are on Kisumu as it cements its place on Kenya’s esports map.
