The IMMAF Africa Championships 2025 opened in Luanda, Angola, with the Youth B and C divisions competing for the honour of continental gold.
Host nation Angola made a strong statement, topping the medals table with a series of standout performances.
Among the highlights was 13-year-old Gisela Luna, who solidified her reputation as one of Angola’s brightest young talents by claiming her second IMMAF Africa gold medal.
In the tournament’s opening bout, Luna faced fellow Angolan Monica Cardoso. She showcased dominant grappling throughout, controlling the pace and leaving Cardoso with limited opportunities, ultimately securing a decision victory.
Another Angolan prospect who impressed was Claudio Fontoura. Competing in the Youth B 57kg (126lbs) division, Fontoura lived up to his growing reputation with a swift armbar submission, earning his second continental title.
The host nation’s hopes of a perfect sweep were halted in the final bout of the day by Aveer Jootun of Mauritius. Competing in the Youth B 72kg (159 lbs) category, Jootun took on Dinis Dinga Bravo in a closely contested battle. After a back-and-forth affair, Jootun emerged victorious, raising hopes for a breakout tournament for Team Mauritius.
Day 2 of the Championships will feature the Youth A divisions, with the continent watching closely as Africa’s next generation of MMA talent continues to emerge.
