The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has confirmed that Harambee Starlets will participate in the 2025 CECAFA Women’s Championship, set to take place from June 12 to 22 in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.

Kenya will join hosts Tanzania, South Sudan, Burundi, and Uganda in the five-nation regional tournament, organized by CECAFA in partnership with the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF).

The competition serves as a critical preparation platform for the Africa Women Cup of Nations (WAFCON), scheduled to begin in Morocco next month.

The decision to host the tournament in Tanzania was announced on June 2 by Yusuf Mossi, CECAFA’s Competitions Director. Mossi explained that staging the championship in June would help WAFCON-bound teams like Tanzania fine-tune their squads and allow other participating nations to build up towards the WAFCON 2026 qualifiers, which resume in October.

“The competition will help our representatives prepare better for WAFCON and allow the other teams to build momentum for the upcoming qualifiers,” Mossi noted.

Following the Women’s Championship, CECAFA will shift focus to other competitions, including the inaugural CECAFA Beach Soccer Championship, scheduled for July 7–12 in Mombasa, Kenya. Other 2025 tournaments include the CAF Women’s Club Champions League CECAFA qualifiers, the Dar Port Kagame Cup, and youth-level qualifiers across the region.

However, CECAFA has confirmed that the Senior Challenge Cup and the U-20 Women’s Championship will not take place this year.

Meanwhile, the Harambee Starlets are in Tangier and will face Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses in an international friendly tonight as part of their preparations for the regional tournament.

On the men’s side, Harambee Stars midfielder Mohammed Bajaber has been ruled out of the upcoming friendly matches against Chad in Marrakech due to injury. The team is set to play Chad on June 7 and 10 as part of its international window schedule.
