Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix preview: Oscar Piastri looking to extend lead – catch action on DStv

Oscar Piastri and McLaren will look to extend their lead in the Drivers and Constructors’ Championships respectively, when the 10th round of the 2025 Formula 1 season, the Canadian Grand Prix, is held at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal on the evening of Sunday 15 June.

Piastri claimed his fifth win of the season with a dominant performance at the Spanish Grand Prix earlier this month, controlling the race from pole position to lead home teammate Lando Norris and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

“It was a great weekend overall. The pace was really good. We could turn it on when we needed to, and I’m just very proud of the work we’ve done this weekend,” said Piastri. “It wasn’t the best first practice, but then we got our stuff together. It’s a nice way to bounce back from Monaco.”

The result saw the Australian extend his lead at the top of the Drivers’ standings to 10 points over second-placed Norris, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen 39 points further back in third place. Mercedes’ George Russell is fourth, and Leclerc rounds out the top five.

“I did, yes, but Oscar drove a very good race today,” said Norris, when asked if he gave everything. “Didn’t quite have the pace to match him, but we gave it our best shot. It’s a long race, anything could have happened at the end, we both got pretty sideways with the safety car restart. It was a good fun race. And for us as a team, to finish one-two is even better.”

In the Constructors’ standings, McLaren enjoy a massive 197-point lead over Ferrari, with Mercedes and Red Bull a further six and 21 points further back in third and fourth respectively.

Keep an eye out for Verstappen and his rivalry with Russell, after the pair had contact late in the Spanish GP which led to a 10-second penalty for the former. The Dutchman and the British driver have ‘history’ from past incidents, and there’s bound to be fireworks if they get near each other – on or off the track.

“Okay, well, next time I’ll bring some tissues,” Verstappen said when he was presented with Russell’s complaints about his driving style. “He has his view, I have my view, and honestly, it is just better to focus on the race, which was quite okay until the safety car.”

The Canadian GP has been part of the F1 calendar since 1967, and has been held in Montreal since 1978. Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton share the record for the most all-time wins (7 each), while Ferrari are the most successful constructor (14 wins).

Verstappen has dominated the event in recent years, claiming three straight wins through 2022, 2023 and 2024.
