Benta Khanili produced a brilliant display to beat a strong field of over 100 golfers to win the 2025 Nyanza Ladies Open Tournament title at the Nyanza Golf Club on Thursday.

Khanili, who shot 88 gross, claimed the overall title after holding off tough competition from some of the region’s finest golfers.

The event attracted players from clubs across the Western region, including Kisii, Nandi Bears, Kericho, and Kakamega, as well as visitors from Golf Park, Ruiru, and Muthaiga Golf Clubs.

Speaking after being crowned champion, Khanili expressed delight at her victory, saying it was a special moment given it was her first time playing at the Nyanza course.
“I am very happy with this win,” she said.

“This was my first time playing here, but I found the course friendly. I just stayed focused on my shots and enjoyed the round. The greens were challenging, but I managed to keep calm and play my game.”

In Division A, Junior golfer Doris Mideva impressed as she took the gross title on countback with 88 gross, edging out Dorgas Bett, who also returned 88 gross. Phyllis Kisuna finished third with 91 gross.

Kenya Ladies Golf Union (KLGU) chairperson Rosemary Mkok, who graced the event and also took part, emerged the Division A net winner with 72 nett. Rosemary Obara and Mercy Wafula finished second and third with 75 and 76 nett, respectively.

Mkok praised the high turnout and said the KLGU is committed to spreading the growth of women’s golf beyond Nairobi.
“It’s encouraging to see such a big turnout here in Kisumu,” said Mkok.

“Our aim as the Kenya Ladies Golf Union is to make sure that women golfers from all regions, including the Western Region, have equal opportunities to play, compete, and grow the game. Nairobi has done well, and we want the same progress replicated in other parts of the country.”

In Division B, Cecilia Ahenda emerged as the overall winner with 92 gross, while Christine Riaroh took the gross title with 96 gross.

Elizabeth Akinyi finished runner-up with 97 gross. The net title went to Alice Gondi with 69 nett, followed by Lunar Magero on 74 nett.

In Division C, Sharon Achieng dominated with 39 points to take top honors, while Faith Ogada came in second with 36 points.

Nyanza Golf Club Lady Captain Lina Akello thanked all the participants and guests for making the tournament a success.

“We are grateful for the great turnout and the support from golfers across the country,” said Akello. “It was a wonderful day of competition, friendship, and growth for women’s golf in our region.”
