Senegal international Ibrahim Mbaye has written his name into the history books after becoming the youngest player to score at the Africa Cup of Nations in the 21st century.

Mbaye scored in Senegal’s 3-1 victory over Sudan, helping the Teranga Lions secure qualification to the quarter-finals of AFCON 2025.

The Paris Saint-Germain youngster found the net at the age of 17 years, 11 months, and 10 days, setting a new benchmark in the modern era of the competition.

With this achievement, Mbaye surpassed a list of notable names, including:

  • John Obi Mikel (Nigeria), who scored aged 18 years, 9 months, and 5 days against Zimbabwe in 2006.
  • Victor Obinna (Nigeria), who netted aged 18 years, 10 months, and 10 days against Tunisia in 2006.
  • Ahmed Hossam “Mido” (Egypt), who scored aged 18 years, 11 months, and 8 days against Zambia in 2002.

Mbaye’s goal adds a historic milestone to Senegal’s AFCON 2025 campaign, while they are one of the top candidates to achieve the title.
