A reserve league has been introduced in Malawi with the Football Association of Malawi describing it as an important missing link in the country’s professional football structure.
The Reserve League will roll into action effective 2027-2028 season after the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Executive Committee approved its introduction.
The decision was made on Saturday, May 9, 2026 following recommendations from the League Development Committee.
In a statement, FAM says the introduction of the reserve league is aimed at strengthening player development, enhancing competition structure and creating a clear pathway for talent development.
“The Reserve League will provide a structured and competitive platform for reserve teams affiliated to clubs participating in the Elite League during a particular season,” reads the statement.
“Under the approved framework, relegation from the Elite League shall automatically result in the relegation of the respective club’s reserve side from the Reserve League.”
To roll out the reserve league, FAM will run a temporary Reserve Cup competition this season to identify teams for the league.
The association has since engaged potential sponsors for the Reserve League ahead of its kick off next season. Currently, reserve teams for the FDH Bank Premiership side compete in regional leagues.
