Eritrea: Nahom Ermias wins Asmara Marathon 2026 to claim third event title

Eritrean athlete Nahom Ermias, from the Gash Barka Region, was crowned champion of the Asmara Marathon 2026, which took place along the capital’s main streets on 7 June.

Nahom completed the race in two hours, 16 minutes, and 22 seconds. He was followed by Olympian Okbe Kibrom from the Central Region Club in second place, and Olympian Okbai Tsegay from Denden Club in third.

Nahom Ermias previously won the Asmara Marathon in 2023 and 2025.

In the women’s half marathon category, Olympian Nazareth Woldu, also from the Gash Barka Region, secured the gold medal and cup, finishing in one hour, 16 minutes, and 11 seconds. Olympian Dolci Tesfu from Denden Club came in second, with Simret Merhawi, also from Denden Club, finishing third.

The Paralympics race was contested in two groups. In the first group, Tedros Aregay, Yonas Hailu, and Petros Samuel claimed first, second, and third positions, respectively. In the second group, Tesfahiwet Tekle, Ibrahim Mohammed, and Dirar Okbamariam secured the top three spots.

Now in its seventh edition, the 2026 event featured athletes from Eritrea, South Sudan, Uganda, and Kenya.

Prizes were presented to the winners by various government officials, and certificates of recognition were awarded to those who contributed to the successful execution of the event.
