Senegal’s dream of reaching the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 ended in devastating fashion as the Lions of Teranga surrendered a two-goal advantage before losing 3-2 to Belgium after extra time in one of the most dramatic matches of the 2026 tournament.

The African giants looked destined for a famous victory after producing an outstanding display for more than 85 minutes in Seattle. Goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaïla Sarr had Senegal in complete control, but Belgium mounted an extraordinary late comeback before captain Youri Tielemans scored a controversial 125th-minute penalty to seal the victory and send the Red Devils into the Round of 16.

Their first warning came when Ismaïla Sarr struck the post after Thibaut Courtois could only parry Ismail Jakobs’ dangerous cross. The pressure eventually paid off in the 25th minute.

Another Senegal attack saw Sadio Mané deliver a dangerous cross into the area. Sarr’s header cannoned off the post, but Habib Diarra reacted quickest to convert the rebound from close range and give the Lions of Teranga a deserved lead.

Belgium struggled to create meaningful chances during the opening half, with Courtois required to make several important interventions to keep his side in the contest.

Belgium introduced Romelu Lukaku at half-time in an attempt to change the game, but it was Senegal who struck again.

In the 51st minute, Moussa Niakhaté delivered a superb long pass that found Ismaïla Sarr. The Crystal Palace forward controlled the ball brilliantly, shrugged off two defenders and fired an unstoppable shot beyond Courtois to double Senegal’s lead.

At 2-0, Senegal appeared to be cruising towards one of the greatest knockout victories in their World Cup history.

With only five minutes of normal time remaining, substitute Romelu Lukaku gave Belgium hope when he turned home Thomas Meunier’s low cross in the 86th minute.

Just three minutes later, Youri Tielemans rose to head home Leandro Trossard’s cross, stunning Senegal and sending the match into extra time.

The dramatic turnaround mirrored Belgium’s famous comeback against Japan at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, when they also recovered from a two-goal deficit to win 3-2.

With penalties appearing inevitable, Belgium launched one final attack deep into stoppage time. As the ball flashed across the penalty area, Lamine Camara challenged Tielemans, prompting the referee to review the incident on the pitchside monitor after a VAR intervention.

Following the review, a penalty was awarded despite furious protests from Senegal’s players.

Tielemans stepped up in the 125th minute and calmly fired the ball into the top corner, scoring what has been reported as the latest goal in FIFA World Cup history and completing one of the tournament’s greatest comebacks.

The defeat was especially painful for Senegal because they had controlled much of the contest.

The Lions of Teranga created the better chances, struck the woodwork twice and defended impressively for most of the match before their late collapse.

After the game, head coach Pape Thiaw described football as a “cruel game,” acknowledging that his side had the match under control but failed to see it through. He also declined to criticize the referee’s controversial penalty decision, saying he preferred not to interpret the incident publicly.

Defender Krépin Diatta admitted the squad had dreamed of making history for Senegal but accepted they had fallen short despite an excellent performance.

Manager Rudi Garcia praised his team’s resilience after they refused to give up despite trailing by two goals late in the match. The comeback was inspired by substitutes, particularly Romelu Lukaku, whose introduction transformed Belgium’s attack before Tielemans produced a captain’s performance with two goals, including the decisive penalty.

The Red Devils now advance to the Round of 16, where they will face the United States who are close to a victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

For Senegal, the defeat will be remembered as one of the most heartbreaking moments in the nation’s football history.

Having led 2-0 with only minutes remaining, the Lions of Teranga were within touching distance of a place in the last 16. Instead, Belgium produced an astonishing comeback that turned celebration into despair, bringing Senegal’s impressive World Cup campaign to a painful and dramatic conclusion.Romelu
