Kenya’s popular coastal resort town of Watamu is preparing for a busy sporting weekend as athletes, fitness enthusiasts and adventure lovers converge for the Watamu Duathlon & Triathlon and Watamu Beach Run, scheduled for 10–11 October 2026.
Hosted by Turtle Bay Beach Resort, the two-day event will combine competitive sport with the attractions that have made Watamu one of Kenya’s best-known coastal destinations.

The duathlon and triathlon will challenge participants across swimming, cycling and running, taking advantage of Watamu’s coastal setting and offering athletes an opportunity to compete in a scenic but demanding environment.
For others, the weekend will be less about competition and more about fitness, adventure and experiencing the coast in a different way.
The event also comes at an important time for Watamu’s tourism and hospitality businesses. The arrival of athletes, supporters and visitors is expected to create additional demand for accommodation, restaurants, transport, tour services, guides and other businesses that form part of the local tourism economy.

Sports events have increasingly become an important part of destination marketing, allowing towns and resorts to attract visitors around experiences beyond traditional beach holidays. For Watamu, the weekend provides an opportunity to connect its established tourism appeal with the growing interest in active and adventure-based travel.
The Watamu Beach Run will broaden the weekend’s appeal by giving runners of different ages and abilities an opportunity to participate. It is also expected to bring spectators and families into the event atmosphere, creating a more inclusive community element around the main endurance events.

Beyond the competition, the weekend will put Watamu’s natural attractions at the centre of the experience, from its beaches and marine environment to its hospitality and outdoor activities.
With participants expected from across Kenya and potentially beyond, the event could provide a useful boost to the destination while demonstrating how sport can complement tourism and local enterprise.

For athletes, it will be a weekend of swimming, cycling and running. For Watamu, it is an opportunity to turn sport into a platform for tourism, business and destination promotion.
From the starting line to the beach, Watamu is set for a weekend where sport meets the coast.
