The Kenyan coastal cycling community is gearing up for one of the country’s most anticipated off-road sporting events as the eighth edition of the Sokoke Forest Mountain Bike Challenge rolls into action this weekend in Kilifi County from 1–3 May 2026.

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Arabuko Sokoke Forest, the annual event continues to grow in stature, attracting both local and international riders eager to test their endurance, skill, and resilience on one of the country’s most unique and demanding natural terrains.

Joseph Nyaga and Kendra Masiga emerged victorious in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively, at the seventh edition of the event in May last year.

Known for its winding forest trails, sandy stretches, and rich biodiversity, the course offers participants not just a race, but an immersive experience through one of East Africa’s most ecologically significant coastal forests.

Organisers Arocha Kenya say this year’s edition promises to be bigger and more competitive, with an increased number of participants and expanded race categories designed to accommodate riders of varying skill levels. From elite cyclists chasing podium finishes to recreational riders seeking adventure, the Sokoke MTB Challenge has carved out a reputation as an inclusive yet challenging event on Kenya’s sporting calendar.

Beyond the competition, the event plays a crucial role in promoting environmental conservation and eco-tourism in the region. By drawing attention to the Arabuko Sokoke Forest, organisers and partners aim to highlight the importance of preserving this fragile ecosystem, which is home to rare and endangered species of flora and fauna.

Local communities are also set to benefit, with the influx of visitors expected to boost economic activity in surrounding areas. Accommodation providers, tour operators, and small-scale traders are among those who stand to gain from the increased footfall during the three-day event.

Safety and sustainability remain key priorities for the organisers, who have put in place measures to ensure minimal environmental impact while maintaining high standards of participant welfare. Riders will be encouraged to adhere to eco-friendly practices throughout the event.

As anticipation builds, the Sokoke Forest MTB Challenge continues to cement its place as more than just a race — it is a celebration of sport, nature, and community spirit. With the 2026 edition set to unfold this weekend, all eyes will be on the forest trails as cyclists push their limits in one of Kenya’s most iconic outdoor events.

Every shilling raised by the Sokoke Forest MTB Challenge directly enables the education of children and the conservation of Arabuko Sokoke Forest.

Designed for both seasoned cyclists and recreational riders, the event offers a dynamic mix of competition and fun. Participants can look forward to epic rides, a vibrant atmosphere, and the chance to win a variety of exciting prizes.
