LALIGA Matchday 3 brings another packed weekend of action, with the early-season title race
beginning to take shape and Spain’s biggest clubs looking to build momentum. Real Madrid,
Barcelona and Atletico Madrid all face intriguing tests, while ambitious sides such as Villarreal,
Betis and Valencia will be looking to make their own statements.
Friday’s action begins with Racing hosting Elche before Alaves welcome Villarreal. The latter is an
early test of Villarreal’s ambitions, with Marcelino’s side hoping to establish themselves among the
leading challengers after a strong previous campaign. Alaves, meanwhile, will look to make home
advantage count in what could be a tightly contested encounter.
Saturday sees Betis travel to newly promoted Levante before Real Sociedad host Espanyol.
Espanyol coach Manolo González has outlined a more controlled approach for his side this
season, with greater emphasis on possession and patient attacking.
“We want us to control games this season… now we want to attack with more patience to reduce
the energy spent running without the ball.”
That philosophy will be tested against a Real Sociedad side traditionally comfortable dominating
possession and dictating the tempo.
The biggest fixture of Saturday comes at Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, where Sevilla host Atletico
Madrid. Diego Simeone’s side will again be among the contenders for major honours, with Julian
Alvarez central to their plans. The Argentine forward has become one of Atletico’s most important
attacking figures, and Simeone is delighted to retain his services.
“The situation is very clear. The entity (club hierarchy) has taken a decision… From the sporting
side of things, we are very happy to have a footballer like Julián. We will help him to keep growing,
to keep improving, and to keep giving us the best of what he has given us over these last two
years, which was a whole lot.”
Sunday begins with one of the weekend’s most anticipated fixtures as Real Madrid host Malaga.
Jose Mourinho’s return to the Santiago Bernabeu has generated enormous attention, but the
Portuguese coach is insisting that the focus remains on building a collective rather than relying
solely on individual brilliance.
“We’re playing as a team, and there’s empathy, there’s teamwork. The team is starting to look like
a team.”
That will be encouraging for Madrid supporters as Mourinho attempts to mould his squad into a
cohesive unit capable of challenging Barcelona for the title.
Deportivo then host Valencia, while Celta meet Athletic Club in another fixture likely to be decided
by fine margins.
Monday concludes the round with Osasuna against Getafe before Barcelona welcome Rayo. Hansi
Flick’s champions will be expected to control proceedings at home, but the German coach knows
that last season’s standards must be maintained if Barcelona are to defend their crown.
“It could be that we’re missing something, we’ll see this week. There’s intensity and quality in
training. I see the team raising its level and that’s the most important thing. We have to work hard
to maintain the level of last season.”
That final clash could provide the perfect stage for Barcelona to demonstrate that their title defence
is already gathering momentum.
With the traditional giants facing different challenges and several ambitious clubs hoping to disrupt
the established order, Matchday 3 promises another fascinating chapter in the 2026/27 La Liga
