Uganda ready to challenge for Rugby Africa Sevens title

Date:

The Rugby Africa Sevens tournament is set to resume this weekend at the Labourdonnais Sports Club in Mauritius, with the second leg kicking off on Saturday.

Uganda, the champions of the first leg, are poised to defend their title and secure their place at the top of the rankings.

Following their impressive performance last weekend, where they clinched the gold medal, Uganda will face Tunisia in their opening match.

The Ugandan team, brimming with confidence, aims to maintain their top form and finish strong in the overall standings. The tournament’s format, which finalizes draws based on the previous round’s rankings, has positioned Uganda favorably as they aim to dominate once again.

The bronze medal winner from the first leg, South Africa, is set to face Nigeria, who finished 10th last weekend. Meanwhile, Madagascar, the losing finalist, will play Côte D’Ivoire, who placed seventh. These initial matchups suggest that the medal winners from the first tournament have a relatively smooth start in the second leg.

The kick-off for the first round of six matches is scheduled for 09:00 local time. The second round will start at 11:44, featuring matches such as Nigeria vs. Zimbabwe and South Africa vs. Mauritius. Uganda will wrap up the second round with a match against Côte D’Ivoire at 13:34. The third round of matches will commence at 15:12, with Uganda facing Burkina Faso at 16:18.

The stakes are high, as the overall champion of the Rugby Africa Men’s 7s will be determined from the combined rankings of the two rounds. The current standings after the first tournament are as follows:

  1. Uganda – 20 points
  2. Madagascar – 18 points
  3. South Africa – 16 points
  4. Burkina Faso – 14 points
  5. Zimbabwe – 12 points
  6. Kenya – 10 points
  7. Côte D’Ivoire – 8 points
  8. Mauritius – 6 points
  9. Zambia – 4 points
  10. Nigeria – 3 points
  11. Tunisia – 1 point
  12. Algeria – 1 point

The second leg of the tournament offers all teams a critical opportunity to hone their skills, refine their strategies, and compete at a high level. For the leading sides, particularly Uganda, this tournament is crucial in securing the coveted title of the 2024 Rugby Africa Men’s 7s champion.

The final rounds of play-offs will determine the eventual winner and the overall standings, with matches scheduled throughout the weekend, concluding on Sunday, July 7. As the teams gear up for this decisive tournament, all eyes will be on Uganda to see if they can replicate their winning performance and clinch the title.
