Ethiopian Tamirat Tola is the 2024 Paris Olympics champions.
Tola delivered a masterclass where he broke the Olympic record to win the Paris Olympic men’s marathon in Paris on Saturday.
Tola clocked an Olympic record of 2hr 06min 26sec for victory.
The Ethiopian was 21 seconds faster than Belgium’s Bashir Abdi who took home silver medal.
Kenya’s Benson Kipruto rounded out the podium, a further 13sec adrift to win bronze as Eliud Kipchoge’s bid for a third gold medal went up in smoke.
Tola entered the Olympic marathon as a substitute two weeks ago, filling in for an injured teammate. Now he is on top of the world.
Bashir Abdi of Belgium upgraded his Tokyo 2020 bronze to Paris silver (2:06:47), while Kenya’s Benson Kipruto claimed the bronze (2:07:00).
