Kabras Sugar RFC, currently at the top of the SportPesa National Sevens Circuit standings, are poised to continue their dominant run at the upcoming Kabeberi Sevens, set to take place at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi.
Fresh off their victory at the Dala Sevens in Kisumu, where they clinched the title in a thrilling final, Kabras are set to headline Group A in what promises to be an intense leg of the 2024 series.
The Kabeberi Sevens marks the fourth leg of the National Sevens Circuit, a competition that has seen Kabras Sugar solidify their position as the team to beat, leading the log with 61 points.
Their closest rivals, Kenya Harlequin, who are in Group C, trail by three points with 58, while KCB Rugby sits in third with 45 points. Menengai Oilers, who finished as runners-up in Kisumu, are currently fourth with 41 points and will be looking to close the gap on the leaders.
Group A: Kabras Sugar’s Continued Dominance?
Kabras Sugar will be tested in Group A, where they face Nakuru RFC, Strathmore Leos, and Impala RFC. Nakuru RFC, who sit eighth in the standings with 30 points, have had an inconsistent run in the circuit so far but could pose a challenge.
Strathmore Leos, currently ninth with 26 points, will also be eager to upset the log leaders. Impala RFC, not in the top 18 rankings, will be looking to make a statement at this stage of the competition.
Group B: Oilers Seek Redemption
Menengai Oilers headline Group B, where they will face Catholic Monks, Stallions Rugby, and Kisumu RFC. The Oilers, currently fourth in the overall standings, are determined to bounce back from their narrow loss in the Dala Sevens final.
Catholic Monks, just one point behind the Oilers in fifth place, make this a fiercely competitive group. Stallions Rugby and Kisumu RFC, ranked 12th and 16th respectively, will need to bring their A-game to stand a chance against the top contenders.
Group C: Harlequins Eyeing Top Spot
Kenya Harlequin, currently second in the standings, lead Group C alongside Nondies, Daystar Falcons, and Blak Blad.
The Quins, who have been consistent throughout the circuit, are expected to advance from this group, but Nondies, ranked seventh, will be eager to spoil their party. Daystar Falcons and Blak Blad, ranked 10th and 11th, are also in the mix, making Group C another competitive pool.
Group D: MMUST and KCB Set for a Showdown
In Group D, MMUST and KCB Rugby are set for an intriguing battle. MMUST, currently sixth in the standings with 39 points, and KCB, third with 45 points, are both strong contenders.
Mwamba, struggling at 14th with nine points, and MKU Thika, not in the top 18, round out the group.
