Ex-Kenyan star Taiwo Atieno backs Sam Nyamweya’s FKF campaign, aims to revitalize Kenyan football

Date:

Former Kenyan international Taiwo Atieno has officially joined Sam Nyamweya’s Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Presidential Campaign as Commercial Director, marking a significant addition to Nyamweya’s team.

Atieno, who was the first Kenyan to play professional football in England’s Football League and FA Cup competitions, brings a wealth of experience in football business and management.

His appointment is aimed at restructuring, rebranding, and driving grassroots football development in Kenya, all while attracting investment into key football assets.

Atieno expressed his excitement at the new role, emphasizing his longstanding relationship with Nyamweya.

“I am deeply honoured to join Sam Nyamweya’s campaign for FKF President. I have known Sam for 15 years, and during this time, I have both played under him and worked alongside him. He is truly passionate about football and demonstrated strong leadership in our recent meeting with other candidates. Sam is a natural leader who understands the game, the dynamics between clubs, leagues, federations, government, and FIFA.”

Atieno’s role as Commercial Director will involve leading key initiatives, such as strategic partnerships, sponsorship mobilization, and the establishment of new FKF training facilities across Kenya.

His focus will also be on launching the “Kick-Start-Kenya-Football” campaign, a fundraising initiative aimed at engaging the Kenyan diaspora to support grassroots football. Additionally, Atieno will spearhead the development of feasibility studies for new FKF headquarters, a national stadium for the Harambee Stars, and a new football philosophy for the future.

Reflecting on his ambitions, Atieno emphasized the importance of football development at the grassroots level, noting that Kenyan football has immense untapped talent.

“Kenya has immense football talent and potential, and I am committed to helping drive a new era of growth and success for the sport in our country. I will ensure that all aspects of Sam’s team, both during the campaign and post-election, uphold the highest professional standards in corporate governance, including the restructuring, rebranding, and repositioning of the national and professional game of football in Kenya.”

Nyamweya, who has known Atieno since his playing days, welcomed him with high praise.

“I have known Taiwo since he was a young player and have been immensely impressed by his continued passion, resilience, and vast knowledge of football business. His international networks and dedication to the growth of football make him the ideal person to drive the commercial aspect of our campaign and, post-election, our executive team.”

Atieno, who currently serves as the Commercial Director of Kenya Premier League Ltd, has been involved in strategic planning and media strategies that aim to elevate Kenyan football to global standards.

His expertise will be instrumental in promoting community-focused football and attracting both local and international investments into the sport.

He is also committed to ensuring that younger football executives have the opportunity to learn the ropes, stating that Nyamweya’s presidency will serve as a transition for the next generation of football leaders in Kenya.

Atieno’s role in the campaign marks a major step towards reshaping the future of Kenyan football, both at the grassroots and professional levels.

With his experience, connections, and passion for the game, many believe that his appointment will strengthen Nyamweya’s bid for the FKF presidency and lay the groundwork for a more prosperous football future in Kenya.
