Egyptian club FC Masar, previously known as Tutankhamun, is set to make its debut at the CAF Women’s Champions League, hosted in Morocco from 9 November to 23 November.
The team, led by star player Mahira Ali, aims to make a lasting impression on the continental stage, with Ali expressing confidence in her team’s potential to cause upsets and even contend for the title.
Speaking to CAFOnline ahead of the tournament, Ali described the team’s excitement and sense of accomplishment after securing a place in Africa’s premier women’s club competition.
“We thank God for this qualification for the final stages of the CAF Women’s Champions League. This is a great achievement for the club, and we hope to offer an honourable performance for Egyptian football,” Ali said.
She added that while they recognize the challenges ahead, they are determined to contribute significantly to the tournament.
FC Masar earned their spot after finishing as runners-up in the UNAF qualifiers, a feat Ali attributes to their unwavering dedication and commitment during training.
“We approached the qualifications with a spirit of competition. We invested ourselves thoroughly during training and carefully followed our coach’s instructions,” she explained. “Understanding the importance of such a competition motivated us to push beyond our limits.”
Having secured their place in the CAF Women’s Champions League finals, FC Masar’s ambitions extend well beyond just making an appearance.
With the experience of winning the Egyptian championship, the team’s goal is clear: to perform at their best and vie for their first continental title.
“We are not naïve about how difficult this will be, but we have shown great character as a team and great belief in ourselves,” Ali shared. “That has gotten us this far, and it could push us to the finish line.”
FC Masar will face tough competition from some of the top women’s clubs in Africa, including several past champions. Ali acknowledges the strength of their rivals but remains optimistic.
“It will certainly be a very tough and competitive tournament because the finals bring together the eight best teams in Africa, with experienced clubs that have already won the title,” she said.
“At FC Masar, we respect each team and hope to be up to the task, with the ambition of winning the title, God willing.”
As FC Masar prepares to represent Egypt on the continental stage, they do so with a blend of excitement and resolve. The team’s journey to Morocco is marked by hard work, belief, and a determination to go all the way in this historic debut.
With Ali leading the charge, FC Masar hopes to inspire Egyptian football and leave an indelible mark on this year’s CAF Women’s Champions League.
