Kiambu’s Michael Karanga, with unwavering determination and a champion’s spirit, emerged as the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) Golfer of the Year. The journey to this moment was no ordinary feat—it was a testament to patience, hard work, and a love for the sport that defied all odds.
Karanga clinched the coveted title with an impressive 834.5 points, outshining his peers in the grueling 28-leg series supported by NCBA. His triumph was sealed at the Nyali Open Championship, the season’s finale, where he demonstrated skill and resilience honed over 18 legs of competition spanning the breadth of Kenya since January.
“It has been tough playing the series, but my love for the sport and great support from my family and friends helped me persevere,” Karanga shared with a bright smile. “The competition was fierce, with my rivals putting up a spirited fight, but my focus and skills carried me through. I’m proud to say I’ll be back next year to defend this title.”
A Riveting Season of Golf
Karanga’s closest rival, John Lejirma of Kenya Railway Golf Club, finished second with 670 points after playing 24 legs. Lejirma demonstrated exceptional skill at Nyali, claiming the Open Championship title with a total score of 212 gross. Kiambu’s youthful prodigy, Elvis Muigua, secured third place with 449.3 points from 22 legs, adding to Kiambu Golf Club’s growing reputation as a hub for rising talent.
The KAGC series was a kaleidoscope of thrilling moments, camaraderie, and spirited competition. Adel Balala of Nyali and Joseph Rono of Golf Park rounded out the top five, showcasing the depth of talent in Kenya’s amateur golfing scene.
In club rankings, Golf Park Golf Club emerged as the top contender with 823.8 points, with Kiambu Golf Club finishing second at 518.8 points. These rankings underline the competitive vibrancy and inclusivity that have become hallmarks of the KAGC series.
