The FA Cup Fifth Round is a crucial stage in the famous English football competition, which is traditionally held each season. It represents the point at which the remaining teams in the tournament battle for a spot in the quarter-finals. In this round, clubs from different tiers of English football – from the Premier League to lower divisions – compete in single-elimination matches.

The Fifth Round usually involves exciting matchups, with top-tier teams facing off against underdogs, offering thrilling drama and unpredictable outcomes. Teams that advance to this stage are just one step away from the prestigious latter rounds, heightening the anticipation and excitement for both players and fans.

Plymouth Argyle will look to record another giant killing when they face Manchester City in the Fifth Round Proper of the FA Cup, played from Friday February 28, to Monday March 3, 2025.

“I’m very emotional because I realised the task, I realised the opponent, I realised it’s the FA Cup, it’s the biggest cup in the world, it’s the most famous cup in the world,” said Plymouth manager Miron Muslic.

“It was omnipresent and very big in the city, in the club and in our locker room and we just wanted to represent Argyle as best as possible.”

The other mismatches in the Fifth Round will see Premier League sides Aston Villa and Crystal Palace host Championship representatives Cardiff City and Millwall respectively. The Palace v Millwall clash, a South London derby, promises to be a fiery encounter at Selhurst Park – with the Lions’ travelling supporters known to incite confrontation – so the top-flight Eagles will need to focus on not being dragged down to the level of their opponents.

“As long as you are in the competition you can win it,” Palace manager Glasner said. “We will go for it. I don’t know if it will work but we will go for it, definitely.”

On facing Millwall in the next round, Glasner added: “I could feel the excitement in the dressing room. It makes this game even bigger than it is – against any other team the target and the goal is the same, to win the game and get into the quarterfinal.”

In other ties, Nottingham Forest will host Ipswich Town; holders Manchester United will face a tricky game at home to Fulham; Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion will have a potential thriller at St James Park; Wolverhampton Wanderers will visit Bournemouth; and an all-Championship tie sees Burnley visit Preston North End.
