Egypt and Kenya win gold at FIBA 3×3 Africa Cup 2023

The FIBA 3×3 Africa Cup 2023 held in Cairo, Egypt, witnessed Egypt (Men) and Kenya (Women) securing gold medals.

In the men’s category, Egypt concluded a flawless run in the competition with a solid 18 – 15 victory over Nigeria. Ahmed Mohamed led his team in scoring with 7 points, complemented by Mido Taha’s contribution of 6. Amr Zahran concluded a 5-point display with an emphatic dunk, securing the victory for the home team.

Ramy Basha played a pivotal role for Egypt, accumulating 18 points throughout the tournament, coupled with significant rebounds that paved the way for his success.

His impactful performance earned him the MVP award. Basha led the Men’s Team of the Tournament, alongside Robert Chima Ukawuba (Nigeria), whose dynamism led Nigeria to silver, and Elly Randriamampionona (Madagascar), the top scorer, securing the bronze.

In the women’s division, Kenya delivered a surprising victory in the final against the home side, Egypt. Both teams remained unbeaten on their way to the final, with Egypt initially holding the advantage.

Despite Egypt being steps away from victory with a 19 – 13 lead, Kenya staged a comeback. Natalie Mwangale, outstanding throughout the tournament, secured the improbable win for Kenya with a buzzer-beating two-pointer. Madina Okot emerged as the star of the game, showcasing an impressive 11-point, 18-rebound performance.

Natalie Mwangale stood out as the shining star for Kenya throughout the tournament, displaying prowess in both offense and defense.

She claimed the MVP award and led the Team of the Tournament alongside Egypt’s Raneem Mohamed, who accumulated 23 points and delivered a fantastic all-around performance, and Harisoa Hajanirina (Madagascar), who led her team to Bronze.

Governed by FIBA, games feature two teams of three players facing off on a basketball half-court. 3×3 made its Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
