AFCON 2023: Nigeria stun Cameroon to glide into the quarterfinals

Date:

Nigeria qualified for the quarterfinals of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations after stunning Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions 2-0 in a tight Round of 16 match played at Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny on Saturday.

Thanks to Ademola Lookman’s brilliant brace, the Super Eagles continued their impressive form against Cameroon, remaining unbeaten in five successive competitive matches.

Nigeria appeared to make the perfect start when Semi Ajayi found the net after nine minutes, but a VAR review ruled the defender offside, denying Nigeria an early lead.

The setback, however, did not deter the Super Eagles, and their persistence paid off in the 39th minute. Oumar Gonzalez’s mistake allowed Victor Osimhen to capitalize on the loose ball and set up Lookman, whose shot found the net after a fumble by Fabrice Ondoa.

The second half saw Nigeria dominate, with Lookman coming close to doubling his tally with a powerful free-kick. Cameroon struggled to mount a comeback, and Nigeria continued to create chances. Lookman sealed the victory in injury time, securing his second goal of the night with a powerful volley from Calvin Bassey’s low cross.

José Peseiro’s Nigeria, unbeaten in four and with three clean sheets in the AFCON finals, showcased their momentum. They will now face Angola in the quarterfinals. On the other hand, Cameroon, who were second best throughout the match, exited the AFCON Round of 16 stage for the second time in their last three finals appearances.

The Super Eagles now look forward to their quarterfinal clash with Angola, aiming to continue their impressive run in the AFCON.
