Kenya: Tabitha Ojwang crowned Nyanza Golf Club’s Mug of the Month of June champion

Tabitha Ojwang clinched the coveted Mug of the Month of June title at the Nyanza Golf Club on Saturday, posting a remarkable score of 64 net in Kisumu, Kenya.

Despite the challenging sunny conditions, Ojwang navigated the picturesque course along the shores of Lake Victoria with ease, becoming the first female golfer this year to secure the prestigious accolade.

The Nyanza Golf Club, renowned for its scenic beauty and challenging layout, played host to over 50 golfers who gathered for the June tournament.

The lush greens and serene waters of Lake Victoria provided a stunning backdrop for the intense competition, making the event a memorable one for all participants.

Ojwang’s triumph is particularly noteworthy as she broke the streak of male dominance in the Mug of the Month series, which had seen men take the title from January through May.

Her victory is not only a personal achievement but also a significant milestone for female golfers at the club.

Reflecting on her win, an elated Ojwang said, “The course was challenging, especially with the scorching sun, but I stayed focused and trusted my swings. It’s an incredible feeling to win, especially as the first woman this year. It shows that with practice, belief, and determination, women at Nyanza Golf Club can compete on equal footing with men. This victory is for all the women who aspire to excel in golf.”

Ojwang’s performance was nothing short of spectacular. She commanded the course with precision and confidence, her swings powerful yet graceful.

Her ability to maintain composure under pressure was evident as she outplayed her competitors in a field brimming with talent.

Her future ambitions in golf are equally inspiring. “I aim to continue improving my game and hopefully inspire more women to take up golf. This sport has given me so much, and I believe that with the right mindset and dedication, we can achieve great things,” she added.

The one-day tournament celebrated golfers born in June and was made possible by the generous sponsorship of several patrons born in the month of June, including Kisumu County Deputy Governor Dr Mathew Owili, Dr. Ojwang Luci, Chair Nyanza Club, Prof. Judith Attyang, I.S. Ogejo, Irene Wagumba, Maurice Oduor, Joseph Attito, Dillu Patel, Homeland Itoya, Ogejo, Omboto and Kijala LLP Advocates, Debby Carters, and Titax Entertainment.

Their support ensured a successful event that highlighted the spirit of camaraderie and competition among the golfers.

Nyanza Golf Club captain Tom Odongo expressed his satisfaction with the tournament’s success.

“The June tourney was a resounding success, thanks to the dedication of our sponsors and the enthusiasm of the golfers. We saw some outstanding performances, and it’s clear that the level of competition is rising. We are committed to further improving our greens to ensure even better tournaments in the future,” Odongo stated.

The tournament also celebrated several other winners across different categories. Ameet Shah emerged as the Winner of Division 1, with Paul Otieno and David Omollo securing the 1st and 2nd Runners-Up positions respectively. Dr. Rosemary Obara took the 3rd Runner-Up spot in Division 1.

In Division 2, Lilian Kongani was the winner, followed by Prashant Thakkar and James Odongo as the 1st and 2nd Runners-Up, with Amrish Patel taking the 3rd Runner-Up position. Dr. Lina Akelo claimed victory in Division 3, with Francis Odhiambo as the Runner-Up.

Other notable winners included Ibrahim Ogejo as the June Baby Winner, Andrew Mulei as the Guest Winner.

Deepak Sohanlal was named Best Senior, while Danit Sokhi won Best Junior. The 1st Nine and 2nd Nine accolades went to Tom Agumbi and Joyce Osike emerge top respectively.

Longest Drive Ladies category saw Moven Smith take home the accolade as Griffin Owino took the Longest Drive men title.

Joseph Attito was recognized for being the Nearest to Pin in the men’s category winner as Dr. Ojwang Lusi was honored for Best Effort, exemplifying the spirit of the competition.

As the sun set over Lake Victoria, the June tournament concluded with a sense of achievement and anticipation for future events. Tabitha Ojwang’s victory stands as a testament to the growing prowess of female golfers at Nyanza Golf Club, heralding a new era of inclusivity and excellence in the sport.
