Kenya: KCB Volleyball team completes safeguarding training ahead of new season

Date:

National Women’s Volleyball Champions, KCB, took part in a vital safeguarding workshop on Friday at the KCB Sports Club in Ruaraka.

The workshop, organized by KCB Bank, Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF), National Olympics Committee of Kenya (NOC-K), and the Kenya National Women Self Defence Association (KNWSDA), aimed at empowering athletes with skills and knowledge to ensure their safety both on and off the court.

This initiative is part of KCB’s ongoing commitment to the holistic development of its players, going beyond athletic training to prioritize their well-being. The workshop provided players with virtual insights on topics such as mental health, financial literacy, legal awareness, and self-defense training. These efforts come amid growing concerns about gender-based violence in the country, making the workshop timely and impactful.

Kenya Volleyball Federation President, Charles Nyaberi, emphasized the importance of the program during the event, stating, “As KVF, we are grateful to all the stakeholders for kicking off this very impact-led program whose time has come. We are all very aware that we have had sad cases, so the safeguarding program will benefit us across the board. We should not wait until another Rebecca Jeptegei is wasted. We should have concerted efforts between stakeholders so that our players, our greatest assets, are taken care of. We intend to replicate the same initiatives across the country.”

KCB Volleyball Captain, Edith Wisa, expressed gratitude for the initiative, especially with the season fast approaching. “I would like to thank KCB for organizing this event when we are about to start our season. It is a good thing because players are taught about situations they come across on and off the pitch that are against their wishes or will. We are very prepared as a team despite losing some key players, and we are positive that we will perform well,” Wisa said.

As teams intensify their preparations, KVF President Nyaberi also confirmed that the new season will officially kick off on October 30, 2024, in Nyeri County. With safeguarding measures in place, KCB is not only focused on maintaining their championship form but also ensuring the safety and welfare of their players throughout the season.
