Chelsea FC will play host to struggling Manchester United at Stamford Bridge in a must-win match on Friday, May 16. The Blues’ hopes of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League took a dent when they succumbed to a defeat to Newcastle United on May 11.

United, on the other hand, equalled their record for the most home defeats (nine) in a league in a single campaign when they lost to West Ham United on May 11 and they will be desperate to end their seven-match winless run in the Premier League. The two teams will be meeting for the 66th time in the Premier League, having won 19 games each, while 27 games ended in a draw.
Speaking ahead of their clash with Chelsea, United captain Bruno Fernandes believes that the Blues will provide a “tough” test, as the London giants are fighting to finish inside one of the competition’s five Champions League places at the top end of the table.
“We have some days to recover, to prepare well for that game,” the Portugal international said.
“We know it’s going to be a very tough game, Chelsea are fighting for a place in the Champions League, but we want to finish the season in the best way possible. We need to go to Stamford Bridge and do that, to get the best result there.”
Chelsea’s London rivals, Arsenal, are yet to clinch the runners-up spot and they are set to welcome third-placed Newcastle United at Emirates Stadium on Saturday, May 17.
The Gunners are coming off an entertaining draw against champions Liverpool on May 11, as they extended their winless run to five matches across all competitions.
Arsenal will be up against a Newcastle side that is riding high on confidence after securing a win over their top-five rivals, Chelsea.
This will be the 60th meeting between the two teams in the Premier League era, and the Gunners have the upper hand, having won 35 games compared to the Magpies’ 13 victories, while 11 games have ended in stalemate.
“We have to [finish the season strongly]. We have a massive game now against Newcastle. We can’t be the best, so we have to make sure that we are the best of the rest. And against Newcastle, we have the opportunity to wrap that up,” said Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.
After dropping points against Arsenal, Liverpool will be keen to bounce back to winning ways when they take on Brighton and Hove Albion at the AMEX Stadium on Monday, May 19, while Manchester City will be determined to boost their top-five bid when they host AFC Bournemouth at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, May 20.
