The CAF African Schools Football Championship CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers got underway with ten matches played at Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya on Monday.
The Ugandans played well, winning both of their games and tallying five goals. Adrian Mukwanga scored three goals to help Uganda defeat Somalia 3-0 in their first game.
Uganda defeated Burundi 2-0 in their second game, with Brian Luwagga scoring a brace. The head coach of Uganda, Daniel Abel Male, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s strong start, notching five goals and giving up none.
“We are here to try and win the title and play at the final next year. This is a very good platform that CAF has provided for the youngsters to play competitive school’s football which will help them further develop their talents, “added the coach.
Uganda, however, leads the boy’s division with six points. After defeating Kenya and Somalia, Tanzania is in second place with an identical number of points but a smaller goal differential. After losing their first game and defeating Somalia 2-0 in their second, hosts Kenya are currently ranked third.
Following two games, Kenya is unbeaten in the round-robin girls’ division as well. They first defeated Tanzania 1-0 before defeating Rwanda 2-0.
The two teams that place highest in each category advance to Wednesday’s finals.
